Monarch alternative: when you would rather ask your AI than open a budgeting app.

Monarch is built for households: one subscription covers unlimited members with separate logins, and Shared Views label accounts and transactions as yours, mine, or ours. Budgeting defaults to its Flex method, with fixed, flexible, and non-monthly buckets, or you can budget by category. Plus adds deeper investment analysis on the desktop web.

The AI Assistant arrived for all members in December 2025. It answers questions about spending, cash flow, net worth, and subscriptions, alongside AI insights, a weekly recap, and AI categorization. Monarch says the outside models it uses do not train on your data, and its privacy policy says it will never sell your financial data. There is a 7-day free trial, and a payment method is required.

Monarch says it believes your data belongs to you, and that people who connected before June 29 will be emailed when the connector returns. Community-built MCP servers exist, but they rely on an unofficial, reverse-engineered library rather than a Monarch API.

Candor is built for this from the start. Your agent works in the Candor workspace, sees what needs attention with the figures behind it, and keeps the budget, goals, and decisions you approved, so the next conversation picks up where the last one ended.

If something crosses a line, such as a price increase, a duplicate charge, a category running ahead of plan, or a bill due before payday, it is waiting when your agent opens the workspace. Totals and budget pace are computed from your records, so your agent reports a figure instead of guessing one. Your agent reads Candor when you ask, or on a schedule if your agent supports scheduled tasks. Candor has no tool to move money, and every read your agent makes is logged with a reason.

Both are read-only toward your bank, both track recurring charges, investments, and net worth, and neither sells your financial data. The table shows where they part ways.

Monarch is well built and keeps shipping: forecasting, the Plus tier, and rebuilt goals all arrived in 2026. If your household checks the numbers together, it is one of the best choices available.

The difference shows up the second time you ask. The budget you approved, the charge you chose to keep, and the reason you gave are already there when your agent opens the workspace.
