What is YNAB?
YNAB, short for You Need A Budget, is a budgeting app built around a method: give every dollar a job before you spend it. It runs on the web, iPhone, Android, iPad, and Apple Watch, costs $14.99 a month or $109 a year, and has a 34-day free trial with no card required. It has no AI assistant, and it cannot move money.
YNAB's strength is the habit it builds. You plan with the money you have, adjust categories when life changes, and reconcile accounts so the numbers stay true. Direct Import brings transactions in from your bank, usually within 24 to 72 hours, and YNAB's help center still recommends a mix of manual entry and importing. Auto-categorization follows your recent choices: when two of your three most recent categorizations for a payee agree, YNAB uses that category.
YNAB added a Card Mode, a CSV converter, and automatic credit card payment matching in September 2026, and a larger remodel with Spotlight alerts in July. Its privacy policy says it does not sell your financial data.
What is Candor?
Candor is the financial workspace the AI you already use works in. Your agent works from your linked accounts, drafts a budget from real spending for you to approve, keeps it current, and brings you what needs attention with the figures behind it. The budget, goals, and decisions you approve are saved with their reasons. Candor is read-only and works in Claude, ChatGPT, Grok Bot, Meta Muse, and other agents.
Budget pace and variance are computed from your records, so your agent reports a figure instead of guessing one. If something crosses a line, such as a category running ahead of plan, a subscription that went up, or a bill due before payday, it is waiting when your agent opens the workspace. Your agent reads Candor when you ask, or on a schedule if your agent supports scheduled tasks.
Candor has no tool to move money, pay a bill, or change anything at your bank. Every read your agent makes is logged with a reason, and you can export your data or delete your account at any time.
Candor vs YNAB: what is the difference?
YNAB is a budgeting method with an app you work in yourself. Candor is a workspace your AI agent works in for you: it keeps the budget current, raises what needs attention, and remembers what you decided. Choose YNAB for the discipline of doing it by hand; choose Candor if the hand work is what keeps slipping.
Both are read-only toward your bank, both import transactions from linked accounts, and neither sells your financial data. The table shows where they part ways.

Can you use YNAB with Claude or ChatGPT?
Not officially. YNAB has no Claude connector or ChatGPT app. Its public API expanded in April 2026, and YNAB mentioned people using AI assistants with it, so community-built MCP servers can connect an agent using a personal access token. They are unofficial, YNAB does not support them, and the API allows 200 requests an hour.
That route suits people who want to keep YNAB as the system of record and are comfortable running a community server. Candor is built the other way around: the workspace is designed for an agent from the start, so setup is one message in Claude or ChatGPT, and the agent finds records, figures, and your saved decisions ready to use.
Who should stay with YNAB?
Stay with YNAB if the method is what works for you: planning every dollar by hand, reconciling, and seeing the numbers yourself each week. It also suits people who want a free month to try it without a card, a native Android and Apple Watch app, or no AI involved at all.
YNAB's community and classes are a real asset, and plenty of people credit the method with getting out of debt. If that routine is working, a new tool will not do it better.
Who should choose Candor instead?
Choose Candor if you believe in keeping a budget but the upkeep keeps slipping, and you already use an AI like Claude or ChatGPT. Your agent drafts the budget from real spending, keeps it current, and brings you the few things that need a decision, so the budget stays honest without an evening of categorizing.
The difference shows up in the second month. The budget you approved, the charge you chose to keep, and the reason you gave are already there when your agent opens the workspace, whichever agent you ask.

Common questions
- How much does YNAB cost?
- As of September 24, 2026, YNAB costs $14.99 a month or $109 a year, with a 34-day free trial and no card required when you sign up on its website. College students can get a free year. Candor is a flat subscription with a free trial, with the price shown before you connect anything.
- Does YNAB have AI?
- YNAB has no AI assistant. Its auto-categorization follows your recent choices for each payee, and its privacy policy says it may use AI to categorize transactions, clean up merchant names, or help with support. It does not answer questions about your money the way an AI agent can.
- Can YNAB connect to Claude or ChatGPT?
- Not officially. YNAB has no Claude connector or ChatGPT app. Community-built MCP servers can reach YNAB's API with a personal access token, but YNAB does not support them. Candor works in Claude, ChatGPT, Grok Bot, Meta Muse, and other agents with one setup message.
- Can I use Candor and YNAB together?
- Yes. They link your accounts separately, so you could keep YNAB as your hands-on plan and let your agent use Candor to watch for price increases, duplicate charges, and bills due before payday. Candor does not read or change your YNAB budget.
- What is the best YNAB alternative?
- It depends on why you are leaving. If the manual upkeep is the problem and you already use an AI like Claude or ChatGPT, Candor. For a polished app you look at yourself, Monarch, or Copilot on Apple devices. For subscription cancelling, Rocket Money.
