Monarch vs YNAB: what is the difference?
YNAB is a budgeting method with an app: you assign every dollar a job before you spend it and keep the plan current by hand. Monarch is a household money app with budgets, goals, investments, and net worth in one dashboard, and its flexible budgeting asks for less upkeep. Monarch's connector for Claude and ChatGPT is live; YNAB has no official one.
Both import transactions from linked banks, run on the web, iPhone, and Android, and do not sell your financial data. The table also shows Candor, for people who would rather have their AI agent keep the budget.

Which should you choose?
Choose YNAB if the hands-on routine is what works for you and you want a month to try it without a card. Choose Monarch if you want less upkeep, investments and net worth beside your budget, and Claude or ChatGPT access today. Choose Candor if you already use Claude or ChatGPT and want it to keep the budget in place of an app.
YNAB's method and community have helped plenty of people get out of debt. Monarch's flexible budgets suit people who tried a strict budget and stopped keeping it.
Is Monarch or YNAB cheaper?
Monarch, slightly, on an annual plan. Monarch Core costs $99.99 a year and YNAB costs $109 a year; both cost $14.99 a month. Monarch Plus, with forecasting and deeper investment tools, costs $199 a year. YNAB's trial is longer: 34 days with no card, against Monarch's first week free.
Candor starts at $8.25 a month on the annual plan ($99 a year), or $14.99 month to month, and the first 7 days are free.
Which is better for couples?
Both cover a household on one subscription, with a login for each person. Monarch adds every household member at no extra cost, and Shared Views mark accounts and transactions as yours, mine, or ours. YNAB Together lets you share your subscription with up to five other people, and each can share a plan with you or keep their own.
Candor gives your agent one workspace that every agent you use opens, so a budget set up in Claude is there when your partner asks ChatGPT.
Which works with Claude and ChatGPT?
Monarch. Its official MCP connector came back on October 21, 2026. You add it to Claude or to ChatGPT on the web with a paid plan, choose read-only or read and write access, and work within weekly usage limits. YNAB has no official MCP server or Claude connector as of October 27, 2026. Community servers connect through YNAB's API with a personal access token.
A connector lets your agent look things up in the app. The budget still lives in Monarch or YNAB, and the reasons behind your decisions stay in old chats.
Do you need either app if you use an AI agent?
Not if your agent has Candor. Candor connects your accounts to Claude, ChatGPT, or another agent, and your agent does the upkeep a budgeting app asks of you. It sets up goals and a budget that pays for them, then keeps both current. Candor calculates the figures, keeps each decision with its reason, and every week points your agent at what changed, such as a category running ahead of plan.
The weekly review reads your records for things like a category running ahead of plan, a subscription that went up, or a bill due before payday. Your agent brings those up when you ask, or on a schedule if it supports scheduled tasks.
Candor is read-only and has no tool to move money. It does not train AI models on your financial information, it records every read and change your agent makes with its reason, and you can export or delete your data at any time.
Pick YNAB or Monarch instead if you want an app to open every day, or if budgeting by hand is the part you enjoy.
What should you check before switching?
Check that your banks connect, that enough transaction history comes through, and that the first budget your agent sets up looks right. Run one complete check-in before you cancel an app that works for you.
Candor links your accounts itself and does not import Monarch's or YNAB's budgets, categories, or history. Export what you want to keep, and ask your agent to rebuild only the plans you want to carry forward.

Common questions
- Is Monarch better than YNAB?
- It depends on how you budget. YNAB suits people who want a strict, hands-on method and the habit it builds. Monarch suits households who want budgets, investments, and net worth together with less upkeep, and anyone who wants Claude or ChatGPT to read their budget today.
- Can you do zero-based budgeting in Monarch?
- Monarch's category budgets let you plan every category each month, and its flex budgeting groups spending into fixed, flexible, and non-monthly. YNAB is built around zero-based budgeting, where every dollar gets a job before you spend it.
- Does YNAB work with ChatGPT or Claude?
- Not officially. YNAB has no official MCP server or Claude connector as of October 27, 2026. Community MCP servers use YNAB's API with a personal access token, and YNAB lists them as third-party apps it does not support. Monarch's connector works in Claude and in ChatGPT on the web with a paid plan, and Candor is in both Claude's and ChatGPT's directories.
- Do I need Monarch or YNAB if I use Candor?
- No. With Candor, your agent sets up your goals and budget from your real accounts and keeps them current, and Candor's weekly review tells it what to bring up first. Keep an app only if you want one to open every day, or if budgeting by hand is the part you enjoy.
- How much does Candor cost?
- Candor starts at $8.25 a month on the annual plan ($99 a year), or $14.99 month to month, and the first 7 days are free.
