How do you budget with ChatGPT?
Pick one of three ways. Upload a few months of spending and ask ChatGPT to draft a budget from it. Link your accounts in ChatGPT Finances and plan a budget from them in conversation. Or add a finance plugin like Candor, which saves the budget and checks it against new transactions. They differ in what ChatGPT sees and what it keeps for next month.

How do you make a budget with a ChatGPT prompt?
Export three months of transactions as a CSV, redact account numbers, attach the file, and ask ChatGPT to build the budget from what you actually spend. Ask it to separate fixed bills, flexible spending, and once-a-year costs, to leave out transfers and card payments, and to ask what you want to protect before it cuts anything.
1. Download the last three complete months of transactions from each bank and card as CSV files. Redact account numbers before you upload.
2. Attach the files and paste a budget prompt, such as the one linked below. Ask ChatGPT to use only the attached files, to say which months they cover, and to show each category's recent average beside its proposed amount.
3. Answer its questions about take-home pay and what matters to you, then ask for the tradeoffs in dollars.
4. Copy the finished budget somewhere you will see it. It lives only in that chat, so next month you upload new spending and paste the budget back in for ChatGPT to compare.
Can ChatGPT Finances make a budget?
Yes, in conversation. OpenAI says Finances can help plan budgets, savings goals, debt payoff, and major purchases from accounts you link through Plaid, and you can ask whether you are on pace in a category. Goals and context you share can be saved as financial memories. Its dashboard shows spending by category, bills, subscriptions, and net worth; OpenAI lists no budget widget.
Finances is available in the U.S. to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users on the web, iOS, and Android. It cannot move money or pay bills.
Check the categories before you set amounts. OpenAI notes that a spending breakdown can look wrong when transfers, card payments, reimbursements, or duplicate pending transactions are counted as spending. ChatGPT can reclassify a transaction and remember the correction for later conversations.
How does Candor keep a budget current?
ChatGPT drafts the budget from the accounts you link in Candor and saves it there as you settle it, with the reason for each change. Candor computes each category's spending and pace from your transactions, and its weekly review raises a category running ahead of plan or a yearly bill coming up. The next conversation, in ChatGPT or another agent, starts from the saved budget.
You don't approve each line. ChatGPT saves what the conversation settles, tells you what it saved, and changes it when your plans change. On Candor's Budget page you can open any line to see what it covers and that month's transactions.
Candor is read-only. It has no tool to move money or pay a bill, it does not train AI models on your financial information, and every read and change ChatGPT makes is recorded with its reason.
What should a first budget cover?
Start from three complete months of real spending. Separate fixed bills, flexible spending, and costs that come once or twice a year. Leave out transfers between your own accounts and credit card payments so nothing counts twice. Give any goal you are saving for its own line, then compare the total with your take-home pay.
A budget built from a template tends to miss the costs that come once a year, such as insurance premiums or a car registration. Three months of real spending catches most recurring costs; ask ChatGPT to look further back for anything billed yearly.
How this page was checked
ChatGPT Finances facts come from OpenAI's help center, checked on October 19, 2026. Candor facts describe the product on that date. We publish Candor, so we have a stake in this guide. The first two ways are free; Candor is for keeping the budget current after the first conversation.
Start this with your agent
Paste this into Claude, ChatGPT, or the agent you use. It sets up Candor, walks you through approving its access and connecting your accounts, then starts on the plan. If setup stalls, your AI's setup guide below has the steps.
Set up Candor from https://candor.money/START.md and walk me through connecting it here. Draft a monthly budget from my last three complete months of spending. Separate fixed bills, flexible spending, and once-a-year costs, and ask me what I want to protect before you cut anything. Then save the budget and tell me what you saved.
Common questions
- Is ChatGPT good at budgeting?
- It is good at drafting a budget from real numbers and explaining the tradeoffs. Its totals over many transactions can be wrong, so check them against your statements, or use a tool that computes them from the records. OpenAI's own help center says AI can make mistakes in spending breakdowns.
- Is there a free way to budget with ChatGPT?
- Yes. Uploading your own spending works on any ChatGPT plan, and ChatGPT Finances is included for U.S. Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users. Candor starts at $8.25 a month on the annual plan ($99 a year), or $14.99 month to month, and the first 7 days are free.
- Can ChatGPT keep track of my budget over time?
- ChatGPT Finances answers from your synced accounts when you ask and can remember goals as financial memories. With a budget made from an upload, you carry it forward yourself. Candor saves the budget with its history and raises drift in a weekly review.
- Does this work with Claude?
- Yes. The prompt works in Claude with an uploaded file, and Candor works in Claude through its connector. Claude has no built-in bank connection of its own.
