How do you connect your bank account to ChatGPT?

You have a money question that needs your real numbers, like whether you can afford a few months off or which card to pay down first. ChatGPT can only help with figures it can see. There are three ways to get your accounts in front of it, each with its own steps. Here is how to do each one, how to check that it worked, and what to do when it doesn't.

Bring ChatGPT the money question you've been putting off.

How do you connect your bank account to ChatGPT?

Pick one of three routes. ChatGPT Finances links your bank through Plaid from the Finances page. A finance plugin from ChatGPT's directory, such as Candor Finance, links your bank in its own app and lets ChatGPT read it with your approval. Or upload a statement to a chat. Each takes a few minutes; the steps for each are below.

Choose one place for the bank connection. Finances and an app like Candor both link the same accounts through Plaid, so connecting both leaves two copies of your bank data and two connections to remove later.

Before you connect, set up your ChatGPT account the way you want it: multi-factor authentication on, your model training choice made, and a permission level picked for any app. The safety guide below walks through each setting.

Which way should you connect?

Use Finances for quick questions about balances and spending inside ChatGPT. Use Candor when you want to work through harder questions over time, with figures computed from your records and the plans you approve kept for ChatGPT or any other agent. Upload a statement when you want a one-off look and no standing connection.

How do you connect with ChatGPT Finances?

Open Finances from ChatGPT's sidebar, select Connect Finances, choose Connect with Plaid, sign in to your bank on Plaid's screen, and pick the accounts to share. Back in ChatGPT, syncing usually takes a few minutes. Finances is available in the U.S. on the web, iOS, and Android for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users.

1. Open Finances from ChatGPT's sidebar. On the web it lives at chatgpt.com/finances. You can also type @Finances, connect my accounts in any conversation.

2. Select Connect Finances. OpenAI's help center calls this button Get started; the label can differ by surface.

3. Select Connect with Plaid, sign in to your bank on Plaid's screen, and choose the institutions and accounts to share.

4. Return to ChatGPT. OpenAI says syncing and categorizing usually take a few minutes and in rare cases several hours.

5. Check that it worked. Ask the question below. ChatGPT should name the accounts it can see and the date of the latest transaction. If an account shows a balance but no history, your bank may share only balances.

Which accounts can you see in Finances, and what is the date of the most recent transaction in each?

How do you connect a finance plugin like Candor?

Find Candor Finance in ChatGPT's plugin directory, select Install plugin and then Connect, sign in to Candor, and choose Allow. Then link your bank in Candor through Plaid, or import statements. The plugin brings Candor's tools and its finance skill together, and the directory is open on every ChatGPT plan, including Free.

1. Open Plugins in ChatGPT's sidebar, or go to Settings > Plugins > Browse directory, and search for Candor Finance. The ChatGPT setup page below links straight to the listing.

2. Select Install plugin, then Connect when ChatGPT asks.

3. Sign in to Candor or create your account, and start your trial.

4. On Candor's sign-in screen, choose Allow. That approves ChatGPT's access to your Candor workspace, not to your bank.

5. Link your bank in Candor through Plaid. If your bank won't connect, import statements instead and your agent works from those records.

6. Set the permission in Settings > Plugins > Candor Finance > Permission. Always ask makes ChatGPT ask before it reads or changes anything. Allow read-only tools lets it read your records freely and still asks before saving a note, budget, or goal, which is a good place to start.

7. Check that it worked. Open a new conversation, select Candor Finance, and send the message below. ChatGPT should name the accounts Candor covers, or say none are linked yet. A plugin badge alone does not mean it can see your records.

Open my Candor workspace and tell me which accounts it covers and how current they are.

How do you upload a bank statement to ChatGPT?

Download a statement or a CSV export from your bank, remove full account numbers, and upload it to a chat with a specific question. Ask ChatGPT to confirm the accounts and dates it read before you rely on an answer. The file and chat stay in your history until you delete them, so this suits a one-off look.

1. Download a PDF statement or CSV export from your bank's website.

2. Remove or cover full account numbers and anything else you would not want kept in a chat.

3. Upload the file and ask one specific question, such as where your spending went last month.

4. Check that it worked: ask ChatGPT which account and date range it read. Then delete the chat and file when you are done if you don't want them kept.

What if it doesn't work?

Most problems are the bank link, missing history, or a setting. If Plaid can't find or reach your bank, try again later or use statements. If history is short, your bank may share only part of it. If Candor's tools are missing after you choose Allow, start a new conversation. Lockdown mode turns off Finances and live connectors, including Candor.

Bank not listed or the Plaid sign-in fails: not every institution connects through Plaid, and banks have outages. Plaid's help center at my.plaid.com/help covers sign-in errors. With Candor, statements are the fallback for a bank that won't connect.

Only balances or a short history: OpenAI says Finances shows only what your bank makes available, so some accounts connect with balances but not full history.

Lockdown mode: it lives under Advanced security in Settings > Security and login. While it is on, Finances and live connectors, including Candor, do not work.

To disconnect: remove a single account in the Accounts tab on the Finances page, or disconnect Finances there. For a plugin like Candor, disconnecting it under Connected accounts in Settings > Plugins stops ChatGPT's access to your Candor workspace; it does not unlink your bank. To remove a bank, disconnect it on Candor's Connections page. Uninstall removes the plugin and can disconnect the accounts connected through it, so read the warning before you confirm.

Where does Candor fit?

Candor is for the questions that take more than one answer: whether you can afford time off, which debt to pay first, whether a raise changes the plan. ChatGPT gets exact figures from your records and what's worth talking through, and the plan you settle on is saved for next time. Candor is read-only and never moves money.

ChatGPT works through the numbers with you and tells you what works, what doesn't yet, and what would have to change. Candor is not a licensed advisor and gives no advice; your agent makes the suggestions and you make the call.

Your agent's conversations stay in ChatGPT and follow its retention and training settings. Candor's own data you can export or delete from your account at any time.

How this page was checked

ChatGPT steps come from OpenAI's Finances, plugins, and app account help articles and its personal finance announcement, including the October 2, 2026 update. Menu names were checked in ChatGPT on the web on October 6, 2026; labels can differ on the phone apps. Candor is included because this is Candor's site. OpenAI changes these features often, so check the linked sources.

Common questions

Is connecting my bank account to ChatGPT free?
ChatGPT Finances is available to U.S. users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. ChatGPT's plugin directory is open on every plan, including Free, though plugins can have their own price. Candor starts at $8.25 a month on the annual plan ($99 a year), or $14.99 month to month, and the first 7 days are free.
Does ChatGPT see my bank password?
No. You sign in to your bank on Plaid's screen, and Plaid says it does not share your bank username and password with the apps you connect. Never type a bank password into a chat.
Can ChatGPT move money once my bank is connected?
Not through Finances: OpenAI says it cannot move money, pay bills, or make trades. Candor has no money-movement tools either. Other apps you install may support actions, so check each one's permissions.
Can I connect accounts outside the U.S.?
Not with these two routes today. OpenAI lists Finances for U.S. users, and Candor operates in the U.S. Uploading a statement works wherever ChatGPT can read your file.
Should I connect both Finances and Candor?
There is little reason to. Both link the same accounts through Plaid, so you would have two places holding your bank data and two connections to remove later. Pick the one that fits how you want help.

Bring ChatGPT the money question you've been putting off.

Candor is read-only and cannot move money. It does not train AI models on your financial information, keeps a history of your agent's financial reads and changes with the reason for each, and lets you revoke an agent's access or export and delete your Candor data at any time.
