Is it safe to connect ChatGPT to your bank account?
It can be, if you set it up with care. ChatGPT Finances links through Plaid, cannot see full account numbers, and OpenAI says it cannot move money, pay bills, or change your accounts. The risk sits around the connection: who can sign in to your ChatGPT account, whether your chats help train OpenAI's models, and what stays in your chat history after you disconnect.
There are three ways to get your bank data in front of ChatGPT, and each carries a different kind of risk. Finances is ChatGPT's built-in feature, which links accounts through Plaid and, separately, credit report data through Experian. Apps from ChatGPT's plugin directory, such as Candor Finance, bring their own access that you approve. The third is downloading statements and uploading them to a chat.
The rest of this page takes the questions people ask before connecting one at a time, with what OpenAI and Plaid say about each.
What can ChatGPT see and do with your bank data?
With Finances connected, ChatGPT can read your balances, transactions, investments, and liabilities. OpenAI says it cannot see full account numbers. It cannot move money, pay bills, change account settings, make trades, change retirement contributions, open or close accounts, or file taxes. It reads and explains; it does not act on your accounts.
Reading is still exposure. A connected ChatGPT can tell anyone who opens your account what you earn, where you shop, and what you owe. That is why the settings below matter more than the link itself.
Plaid handles the bank sign-in. Plaid says it does not share your bank username and password with the apps you connect, and it encrypts data in transit. OpenAI says ChatGPT shows only what your bank makes available, so some accounts connect with balances but not full history.
Does ChatGPT train on your bank data?
It follows your setting. OpenAI says Finances conversations use the same model training setting as the rest of ChatGPT. On Free, Go, Plus, and Pro, OpenAI may also train on information ChatGPT reads from apps if "Improve the model for everyone" is on. Turn it off in Settings > Data controls if you don't want your financial chats used.
Temporary chats are the other option. OpenAI says a temporary chat cannot reach your connected accounts, does not use or create memories, and does not appear in your history.
If you use Candor in ChatGPT, two policies apply. Candor does not train AI models on your financial information and never sells it. Once ChatGPT reads a figure from Candor, that conversation lives in ChatGPT and follows ChatGPT's setting, so set it there too.
How do Finances, an app like Candor, and uploads compare?
None of the three can move money. They differ in what they can read, what record you get of what was read, and what is left behind after you leave. Uploading statements is the least controlled: a PDF can show full account numbers, and the file stays in your chat until you delete it.
Pick one place for your bank connection. Finances suits quick questions about balances and spending inside ChatGPT. Candor suits working through harder questions over time: it gives ChatGPT the exact figures, finds what's worth talking through and tells it why, and keeps the plans and decisions you approve, for ChatGPT or any other agent you use.

What should you set before you connect?
Five settings, in this order: multi-factor authentication on your ChatGPT account, your model training choice, the permission level for any finance app, a look at what financial memories ChatGPT has saved, and where to disconnect. Ten minutes now covers most of what can go wrong later.
Pick the app permission on purpose. ChatGPT's menu runs from Always ask through Allow read-only tools and Allow low-risk tools to Allow all tools (OpenAI's help center calls them Allow read actions, Allow low-risk actions, and Allow all actions), and OpenAI warns that allowing everything carries elevated risk because supported actions may run without another confirmation. For Candor, Allow read-only tools lets ChatGPT read your records freely and still ask before it saves a note, budget, or goal in your workspace.

When should you wait before connecting?
Wait if someone else can sign in to your ChatGPT account, if you would rather not have financial chats used for training and haven't changed the setting, or if the account belongs to your employer. Also wait if you plan to act on an answer without checking the transactions behind it. Not yet is a fine answer; fix the setting first.
Keep personal money out of work accounts. OpenAI says conversations in ChatGPT Business and Enterprise workspaces, including conversations that use apps, are available to the workspace's compliance tools.
Shared family logins are the other common gap. A connected account answers whoever is signed in.
Can another app or a web page get at your financial data?
It is possible. OpenAI says an enabled app may use relevant context from your conversations and, with Memory on, your memories. A page or file with hidden instructions can also try to steer an assistant into sharing what it can read. Enable only the apps you need beside your finances, and read any request to send data before you approve it.
OpenAI says ChatGPT may ask for approval before an app reads information or takes an action. Treat those prompts as the check they are, especially in a conversation that already contains your balances.
For a stricter setting, turn on Lockdown mode under Advanced security in Settings > Security and login. It limits features that can reach the web or outside services, to help protect sensitive data from prompt-injection attacks. The tradeoff is real: Finances and live connectors, including Candor, do not work while it is on. Data controls also has Information shared with apps, where you can manage what ChatGPT shares with the apps you use.
How do you disconnect and delete your data?
Disconnect Finances from its page in ChatGPT's sidebar. OpenAI deletes synced account data within 30 days, and Plaid deletes the data tied to that connection within 30 days. For an app, open it in Settings > Plugins: disconnect one account under Connected accounts, or choose Uninstall, which can disconnect them all. In every case, past chats and saved memories stay until you delete them yourself.
Disconnecting Candor in ChatGPT does not unlink your bank; remove a bank on Candor's Connections page. In Candor, revoke ChatGPT's access in your account controls, and export or delete your Candor data there. Plaid connections you made for other apps are separate; manage those in Plaid Portal.
Where does Candor fit?
Candor gives ChatGPT what it needs to help with your hard money questions honestly: exact figures from your records, what's worth talking through and why, and the plan and reasons you approve, saved for next time. Candor is read-only toward your bank and never moves money. ChatGPT acts elsewhere only with your okay.
Bring it the question you've been putting off, like whether you can pay the card down by summer, or bring nothing and ask what deserves a look. ChatGPT works through the figures and tells you what works, what doesn't yet, and what would have to change. Candor is not a licensed advisor and gives no advice; your agent makes the recommendations and you make the call.
How this page was checked
ChatGPT facts come from OpenAI's Finances and connected apps help articles and its personal finance announcement, including the October 2, 2026 update, all read on October 6, 2026. Settings paths were checked in ChatGPT on the web the same day. Plaid facts come from Plaid's consumer page. Candor is included because this is Candor's site. OpenAI updates these features often, so check the linked sources and your own settings.
Common questions
- Can ChatGPT move money out of my bank account?
- Not through Finances. OpenAI says ChatGPT cannot move money, pay bills, make trades, or change your accounts. Candor in ChatGPT cannot either: it has no money-movement tools. Other apps you enable may support actions, so check each one's permissions.
- Does ChatGPT see my bank password?
- No. You sign in on Plaid's screen, and Plaid says it does not share your bank username and password with the apps you connect. Never type a bank password into a chat.
- Does Plaid keep my data after I disconnect ChatGPT?
- OpenAI says data tied to the ChatGPT connection is deleted from Plaid within 30 days, in line with Plaid's policies. Connections you made through Plaid for other apps are not affected; review those in Plaid Portal.
- Is ChatGPT Finances free?
- OpenAI's help center says Finances is available in the U.S. to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users on web, iOS, and Android, after the October 2, 2026 rollout to Free and Go.
- Can I use ChatGPT Finances and Candor together?
- You can, but there is little reason to. Both link the same accounts through Plaid, so connecting both means two places holding your bank data and two connections to remove later. Choose the one that fits how you want help. Your ChatGPT training setting applies to conversations with either.
