Copilot vs Monarch: what is the difference?
Monarch is a household budgeting app for the web, iPhone, iPad, and Android, at $99.99 a year. Copilot Money is a spending tracker for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web, at $95 a year. Monarch's connector for Claude and ChatGPT is live with weekly limits, and Copilot's is a waitlisted beta. Neither can move money.
Both are read-only toward your bank, both track recurring charges, investments, and net worth, and neither sells your financial data. The table also shows Candor, for people who would rather have their AI agent keep the budget.

Which should you choose?
Choose Monarch for a shared household budget or an Android phone. Choose Copilot for a polished app on Apple devices if you budget on your own. Choose Candor if you already use Claude or ChatGPT and want it to keep your budget and goals in place of a budgeting app.
Copilot's design is the reason people pick it, and its categories learn from the ones you review. In the past year Monarch added rebuilt goals, a Plus tier, a faster AI Assistant, and its MCP connector.
Is Copilot or Monarch cheaper?
Copilot, slightly. Copilot costs $95 a year or $13 a month. Monarch Core costs $99.99 a year or $14.99 a month, and Monarch Plus, with forecasting and deeper investment tools, costs $199.99 a year. Both ask for a payment method to start the free trial, which runs one month for Copilot and seven days for Monarch.
Candor starts at $8.25 a month on the annual plan ($99 a year), or $14.99 month to month, and the first 7 days are free.
Which is better for couples?
Monarch. One subscription covers the household, each member gets their own login at no extra cost, and Shared Views mark accounts and transactions as yours, mine, or ours. Copilot shares one account through a magic sign-in link, and every signed-in device gets full control of it.
Does Copilot work on Android?
No. Copilot lists iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web as its platforms, and it works with U.S. accounts only. Monarch runs on the web, iPhone, iPad, and Android, in the U.S. and Canada.
Candor has no phone app of its own. You use it through Claude, ChatGPT, or another agent, wherever that agent runs, and on a web dashboard.
Which works with Claude and ChatGPT?
Monarch, today. Its official MCP connector came back on October 21, 2026. You add it to Claude, ChatGPT on the web with a paid plan, Gemini CLI, or Cursor, choose read-only or read and write access, and work within weekly usage limits. Copilot's own read-only MCP server has been in a waitlisted beta since May 2026.
A connector lets your agent look things up in the app. The budget still lives in Monarch or Copilot, and the reasons behind your decisions stay in old chats. Accounts Monarch connects through Finicity, which can include Fidelity brokerage accounts, are not available through its connector yet.
Do you need either app if you use an AI agent?
Not if your agent has Candor. Candor connects your accounts to Claude, ChatGPT, or another agent, and your agent does the job a budgeting app does. Tell it what you want, and it sets up goals measured from your accounts and a budget that pays for them. Candor calculates the figures, keeps each decision with its reason, and every week tells your agent what's worth talking through and why.
The weekly review reads your records for things like a price increase, a duplicate charge, a category running ahead of plan, or a bill due before payday. Your agent brings those up when you ask, or on a schedule if it supports scheduled tasks.
Candor is read-only and has no tool to move money. It does not train AI models on your financial information, it records every read and change your agent makes with its reason, and you can export or delete your data at any time.
Pick Copilot or Monarch instead if you want an app to open every day, or a separate login for each person in your household.
What should you check before switching?
Check that your banks connect, that enough transaction history comes through, and that the first budget your agent sets up looks right. Run one complete review before you cancel an app that works for you.
Candor links your accounts itself and does not import Copilot's or Monarch's budgets, categories, or history. Export what you want to keep, and ask your agent to rebuild only the plans you want to carry forward.
How did we compare them?
We publish Candor, so we have a stake in this comparison. Copilot and Monarch facts come from their own pricing pages, help centers, and product updates, checked October 16, 2026. Monarch's connector was checked again on October 23 and Copilot's product updates on October 24, 2026.
Prices and beta programs change often. The sources below link to each vendor's own page.
Common questions
- Is Copilot better than Monarch?
- It depends on who is budgeting. Copilot suits one person on Apple devices who wants a polished app with categories that learn from them. Monarch suits households, Android users, and anyone who wants Claude or ChatGPT to read their budget today.
- Does Copilot Money work with ChatGPT or Claude?
- Not yet for most people. Copilot's official read-only MCP server is in a waitlisted beta, and community servers are unofficial and sit outside Copilot's terms. Monarch's connector works in Claude and in ChatGPT on the web with a paid plan, and Candor is in both Claude's and ChatGPT's directories.
- Do I need Copilot or Monarch if I use Candor?
- No. With Candor, your agent sets up your goals and budget from your real accounts and keeps them current, and Candor's weekly review tells it what's worth talking through. Keep an app only if you want one to open every day, or a separate login for each person in your household.
- Is Copilot Money the same as Microsoft Copilot?
- No. Copilot Money is an independent budgeting app at copilot.money. Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant. They are unrelated.
- How much does Candor cost?
- Candor starts at $8.25 a month on the annual plan ($99 a year), or $14.99 month to month, and the first 7 days are free.
