Monarch vs Rocket Money: what is the difference?
Monarch is a budgeting and planning app for households, at $99.99 a year, with budgets, goals, investments, and net worth. Rocket Money is a subscription and bill app with a free plan, where Premium adds a team that cancels supported subscriptions and Premium+ adds Rowan, an AI assistant that works by text. Monarch's connector for Claude and ChatGPT is live; Rocket Money has none.
Both connect to your bank and card accounts, track spending against a budget, and list recurring charges. The table also shows Candor, for people who would rather have their AI agent do these jobs.

Which should you choose?
Choose Monarch to plan a household budget, track investments, and let Claude or ChatGPT read it today. Choose Rocket Money to have a team or Rowan cancel subscriptions and negotiate bills, or to start on a free plan. Choose Candor if you already use Claude or ChatGPT and want it to do both jobs in place of an app.
Monarch suits people who sit down with their numbers and want a clear picture of everything, shared with a partner. Rocket Money suits people who want to cut recurring costs and not think about a budget much beyond that.
Is Monarch or Rocket Money cheaper?
Rocket Money, if the free plan covers what you need. Premium costs what you choose from $7 to $14 a month, and Premium+ costs $15 a month. Monarch has no free plan: Core costs $99.99 a year or $14.99 a month, and Plus costs $199 a year. Monarch's first week is free, and Rocket Money Premium has a 7-day trial.
Bill negotiation adds to Rocket Money's cost. On Free and Premium, a successful negotiation submitted before November 2, 2026 costs 35% to 60% of the first year's savings, even if it succeeds later. Negotiations submitted from that date are Premium+ only, with no fee.
Candor starts at $8.25 a month on the annual plan ($99 a year), or $14.99 month to month, and the first 7 days are free.
Which is better for cancelling subscriptions?
Rocket Money. Monarch lists your recurring charges, and you cancel each one yourself. Rocket Money's team cancels supported services on Premium, and on Premium+ Rowan does it by text when you reply. For subscriptions billed through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Roku, or PayPal, it gives you the steps to cancel yourself.
With Candor, your agent does this job. Candor's weekly review raises a price increase, a duplicate, or a new recurring charge when one is worth acting on, and your agent cancels it with your okay, in a browser or by email. Many agents can now use a browser for you, such as Claude in Chrome or the browser in ChatGPT Work, and if yours can't yet, it drafts the message. Candor keeps a note to check the next bill.
Which is better for budgeting and couples?
Monarch, for budgeting. It offers flex or category budgets, goals, forecasting on Plus, and investment holdings. Rocket Money's free plan allows two custom budgets, and Premium adds unlimited budgets and goals. For couples, both give each partner a login: Monarch includes everyone in the household at no extra cost, and Rocket Money Premium shares with one partner.
Candor gives your agent one workspace that every agent you use opens, so a plan you make in Claude is there when your partner asks ChatGPT.
Which works with Claude and ChatGPT?
Monarch. Its official MCP connector came back on October 21, 2026. You add it to Claude or to ChatGPT on the web with a paid plan, choose read-only or read and write access, and work within weekly usage limits. Rocket Money has no official connector; Rowan works by text message, and the community MCP server signs in with your web session cookie.
A connector lets your agent look things up in the app. The budget still lives in Monarch, and the reasons behind your decisions stay in old chats.
Do you need either app if you use an AI agent?
Not if your agent has Candor. Candor connects your accounts to Claude, ChatGPT, or another agent, and your agent does both apps' jobs. With your okay, it cancels subscriptions and asks for lower bills, and it sets up goals and a budget that pays for them. Candor calculates the figures, keeps each decision with its reason, and every week points your agent at what changed, like a price increase.
The money a cancelled subscription frees can go straight to a card balance or a down payment, and your agent tracks it against that goal.
Candor is read-only and has no tool to move money. It does not train AI models on your financial information, it records every read and change your agent makes with its reason, and you can export or delete your data at any time.
Candor has no credit score and no savings account. Pick Monarch or Rocket Money instead if you want an app to open every day, a separate login for each person in your household, or a credit score in the same place.
What should you check before switching?
Check that your banks connect, that enough transaction history comes through, and that your agent finds the recurring charges you expect. Run one complete check-in before you cancel an app that works for you.
Candor links your accounts itself and does not import Monarch's or Rocket Money's budgets, categories, or history. Export what you want to keep, and ask your agent to rebuild only the plans you want to carry forward.
