How to find forgotten subscriptions, and make sure they stop.

Forgotten subscriptions hide in three places: bank and card statements, app store billing, and free trials that quietly turned paid. You can find them yourself in an afternoon with three months of statements. An AI agent working in Candor does it from your real transactions: Candor detects recurring payments automatically, puts price increases, duplicate charges, and new recurring charges on a short list of what needs a decision, and keeps a note to check that a cancelled charge actually stopped.

How it works with your agent

  1. 1

Connect your cards and bank accounts to Candor through bank-grade secure sign-in.

  2. 2

Candor detects recurring payments and lists price increases, duplicates, and new recurring charges with the transactions behind them.

  3. 3

Your agent asks which services you still use, then drafts the cancellation or refund request for you to approve.

  4. 4

Candor keeps a note to check the next billing cycle, so the agent confirms the charge stopped or the credit posted.

How do you find subscriptions you forgot about?

Pull the last three months of statements for every card and bank account, list each charge that repeats, then check your App Store and Google Play subscription lists and search your email for receipts and renewal notices. Mark each one keep, downgrade, or cancel. Three months catches monthly charges; a full year catches annual renewals.

Most people guess low. In a 2022 C+R Research survey of 1,000 U.S. consumers, people estimated their subscription spending at $86 a month; when they itemized it, the average was $219. In a March 2026 Self Financial survey of 1,272 U.S. adults, 70% had forgotten to cancel a free trial at some point and been charged, and nearly 60% were paying for at least one subscription they did not use.

Look for the charges that are easy to miss: small amounts, annual renewals that post once a year, charges billed through PayPal or an app store under a different name, and the same service billed to two different cards. A subscription that moved to a new card when the old one expired often keeps running long after you stopped thinking about it.

Where do app store subscriptions show up?

On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. On Android, open the Google Play app and go to Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Deleting an app does not cancel its subscription; you have to cancel it in the store.

App store charges appear on your statement under Apple or Google rather than the service's name, which is why they are easy to miss in a statement review. Check both lists even if you think you have nothing there. Google's help center says plainly that uninstalling the app will not cancel the subscription.

Can your bank show your recurring charges?

Some can. Capital One's mobile app lists expected recurring charges on its credit cards and lets you block a merchant or cancel some subscriptions from the app. A bank's view covers only that bank's accounts, and Capital One notes that not every recurring charge may be identified.

Bank tools are a good first pass for one card. They miss the pattern that spans accounts: the same service billed to two cards, or a charge that moved from an old debit card to a new credit card. That is where a review across every account earns its keep. Blocking a charge at the bank also does not close your account with the merchant; you still need to cancel with them.

How does an AI agent find forgotten subscriptions?

Your agent works in Candor, which detects recurring payments automatically from your connected accounts. Candor reviews your records whenever they change and puts price increases, duplicate charges, new recurring charges, overlapping services, and upcoming annual renewals on a short list of what needs a decision, with the transactions attached. Claude, ChatGPT, Grok Bot, or Muse reads that list and asks what you still use.

The difference from pasting a statement into a chat is that the records stay current and the work is saved. A new recurring charge you did not expect often means a free trial just converted. A price increase comes with the before and after transactions. Two music services on two cards show up together, and the agent asks who uses each before calling anything unused. If nothing qualifies, the list is empty.

What you decide is saved in Candor with its reason: a recurring payment you confirmed, a charge you chose to keep, a cancellation still to verify. The next conversation, or a different agent, starts from those decisions instead of asking again. If your agent supports scheduled tasks, you can have it run this review monthly; the schedule is the agent's, not Candor's.

What if a cancelled subscription is still charging you?

Gather your cancellation confirmation and ask the merchant for a refund first. If that fails and you paid by credit card, send your card issuer a written billing error notice within 60 days of the statement showing the charge. Cancelled recurring charges were the most common reason for disputes on general purpose credit cards in 2024, 40% of all disputes, per the CFPB.

Charges after cancellation usually come from a cancellation that never completed, a billing cycle that had already started, or a second account you forgot existed. In Candor, when you cancel something, your agent saves a note with a date to check the next billing cycle. When that date arrives, the note comes back on the list, and the agent checks your transactions for a new charge or the promised credit before calling it done.

If the charge posted again, the agent drafts the follow-up to the merchant or the dispute to your card issuer with the dates and amounts from your records. You send it, or approve the agent sending it through its own tools.

Can AI cancel subscriptions for you?

Some services can. Rocket Money's Premium concierge cancels subscriptions for you, and its Rowan assistant, in a new Premium+ tier, texts you ways to save and can cancel subscriptions. Meta Muse can cancel what you do not need after checking with you. Candor cannot cancel anything: your agent drafts the request and acts through its own tools with your approval.

If you want a service to handle the cancellation end to end, Rocket Money or Muse may fit. Rocket Money announced Rowan on August 25, 2026, available to select subscribers first. Muse, launched by Meta in September 2026, audits subscriptions and flags charges you forgot as part of its Finances experience.

Candor is read-only by design. It has no tool to cancel a service, move money, or pay a bill, and it logs every read with a reason. Your agent does the outside work: it writes the cancellation email, fills in the merchant's form, or opens the support chat, and it asks you first. Candor keeps the record of what was decided and whether it worked.

What has this found in practice?

In one documented Candor case, two subscriptions on two different accounts billed at different times of the month and went unnoticed by the finance apps already in use. After the accounts were connected to Candor, Grok Bot found the overlap, contacted support outside Candor, and secured a $1,149.69 refund.

It is one case, not a typical result. It shows the pattern that single-account views miss: related charges split across accounts and billing dates.

How do you set this up with your agent?

Create a Candor account, choose a plan with a free trial, and connect your cards and bank accounts through bank-grade secure sign-in. Copy the one-line setup message into Claude, ChatGPT, Grok Bot, Muse, or another capable agent, and approve its access. Then ask it to review your recurring charges.

Connect every account that pays for anything, including the old card a service might still bill. The more accounts Candor sees, the more cross-account patterns show up. Agents that run locally, such as Claude Code or Codex, can use the Candor CLI; hosted assistants use the remote MCP server.

Common questions

How do I find all my recurring charges?
Review three to twelve months of statements for every card and bank account, and list each charge that repeats. Then check the Apple and Google Play subscription lists. An agent working in Candor does this from your connected accounts, with recurring payments detected automatically.
Why am I still being charged after cancelling a subscription?
Usually the cancellation did not complete, the new billing cycle had already started, or the service bills a second account. Send the merchant your cancellation confirmation and ask for a refund. For a credit card charge, you can dispute it in writing within 60 days of the statement.
How do I spot a duplicate subscription charge?
Look for the same merchant and amount a few days apart, or the same service billed to two cards. Check that one is not a pending charge that later posted. Candor puts identical charges days apart on the list, and your agent asks whether both were intended before drafting a dispute.
Does deleting an app cancel the subscription?
No. Google Play's help center says uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription, and Apple subscriptions are cancelled in Settings under your name, then Subscriptions. Cancel in the store or with the service itself.
Can Candor cancel subscriptions for me?
No. Candor is read-only and has no tool to cancel a service or move money. Your agent drafts the cancellation or refund request and acts through its own tools with your approval, and Candor keeps a note to check that the charge stopped.
Is there an AI that finds forgotten subscriptions?
Yes. Rocket Money and its Rowan assistant, Meta Muse's Finances, and bank tools such as Capital One's subscription view all find recurring charges. Candor lets the agent you already use, such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Grok Bot, find them across all your accounts and remember what you decided.
