Monarch vs Quicken: what is the difference?
Quicken Classic is desktop software for Windows and Mac that stores your data on your computer, with a mobile and web companion app. Monarch is a cloud app on the web, iPhone, iPad, and Android, built for households budgeting together. Quicken goes deeper on investments, bills, and rental or business tracking. Monarch has an AI Assistant and a connector for Claude and ChatGPT; Quicken Classic has neither.
Quicken's other product, Simplifi, is a cloud budgeting app with a spending plan, projected cash flow, and a Quicken AI chat in beta. It is the closer match to Monarch, and Quicken's own comparison page pits Simplifi against Monarch.

Which should you choose?
Choose Quicken Classic if you want your data on your own computer, detailed investment and tax reports, or rental and business tracking in one file. Choose Monarch if you want a cloud app a household can share, less upkeep, and Claude or ChatGPT access today. Choose Candor if you already use Claude or ChatGPT and want it to keep the budget in place of an app.
Quicken has been around for more than 40 years and imports files from Quicken for Windows 2010 or newer and Microsoft Money 2008 and 2009, which matters if you have years of history. Monarch suits people who want to open the same budget on their phone and their partner's.
Is Monarch or Quicken cheaper?
Quicken, in the first year. Quicken Classic Deluxe is $6.99 a month billed annually on an offer that ends November 29, 2026, and renews at the then-current rate. Monarch Core is $99.99 a year or $14.99 a month, and Monarch Plus is $199.99 a year. Quicken Simplifi is $3.99 a month billed annually on the same first-year offer, against a listed $6.99.
Candor starts at $8.25 a month on the annual plan ($99 a year), or $14.99 month to month, and the first 7 days are free.
Which is better for investments?
Quicken Classic, if you want detailed reports. Quicken says no other finance tool goes deeper on investments, with IRR analysis, and Premier adds Morningstar Portfolio X-Ray. Monarch tracks holdings, allocation, and performance, and Monarch Plus adds gains and losses and Morningstar fund analysis.
With Candor, your agent sees holdings and balances from your accounts and can track a net worth or retirement goal alongside your budget.
Which works with Claude and ChatGPT?
Monarch. Its official MCP connector lets Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI, and ChatGPT on the web with a paid plan read your Monarch data, read-only unless you allow changes, with weekly usage limits. Quicken has no official connector or MCP server as of November 6, 2026; a request for one in Quicken's community forum is marked Reviewed.
A connector lets your agent look things up in the app. The budget still lives in Monarch, and the reasons behind your decisions stay in old chats.
What are the best Quicken alternatives?
Monarch, for a household cloud app with a Claude and ChatGPT connector. Quicken Simplifi, if you want to stay with Quicken in the cloud. YNAB, for hands-on zero-based budgeting at $109 a year. Copilot Money, for Apple devices and the web at $119 a year. And Candor, if you want the AI agent you already use to keep your budget and goals.
If you rely on Quicken for bill pay or for decades of history in one file, check that the replacement covers it before you switch. Quicken exports to QXF, QIF, and Excel, and to TurboTax for tax data.
Do you need either app if you use an AI agent?
Not if your agent has Candor. Candor connects your accounts to Claude, ChatGPT, or another agent, and your agent does the upkeep a money app asks of you. It sets up goals and a budget that pays for them, then keeps both current. Candor calculates the figures, keeps each decision with its reason, and every week points your agent at what changed, such as a bill that went up.
Candor is read-only and has no tool to move money. It does not train AI models on your financial information, it records every read and change your agent makes with its reason, and you can export or delete your data at any time.
Candor links your accounts itself and does not import Quicken's or Monarch's budgets, categories, or history. Export what you want to keep, and ask your agent to rebuild only the plans you want to carry forward. Keep Quicken if a local file and bill pay are what you need.

Common questions
- Is Monarch better than Quicken?
- It depends on how you work. Monarch suits households who want a shared cloud app with budgets, goals, and investments, and anyone who wants Claude or ChatGPT to read their data. Quicken Classic suits people who want desktop software, data stored locally, detailed investment reports, or rental and business tracking.
- Can Monarch import my Quicken data?
- Monarch imports transactions from a CSV file on its website. Quicken Classic exports reports to Excel and data to QXF and QIF files, so check what comes across before you rely on years of history in Monarch.
- Is Quicken Simplifi the same as Quicken Classic?
- No. Simplifi is Quicken's cloud app for the web and phone, with a spending plan, projected cash flow, and a Quicken AI beta. Classic is installed on Windows or Mac and stores your data locally.
- Does Quicken work with ChatGPT or Claude?
- Not officially. Quicken has no MCP server or Claude connector as of November 6, 2026. Quicken AI, in beta in Simplifi, uses third-party language models such as ChatGPT inside Quicken's app. Monarch's connector works in Claude and in ChatGPT on the web with a paid plan, and Candor is in both Claude's and ChatGPT's directories.
- Do I need Monarch or Quicken if I use Candor?

- How much does Candor cost?
- Candor starts at $8.25 a month on the annual plan ($99 a year), or $14.99 month to month, and the first 7 days are free.
