# Monarch Money review: is it worth it, and is it safe?

Updated 2026-11-01. Canonical page: https://candor.money/monarch-money-review

Monarch is a safe, well-rated budgeting app, and it is worth $99.99 a year if you or your household will open it and keep the budget up. It is one of the strongest choices for couples. If you won't keep checking an app, the budget goes stale and the price won't pay off. If you already ask Claude or ChatGPT about money, you can choose Candor instead. Your agent keeps the budget, and every week Candor tells it what's worth talking through.

## How it works with your agent

1. Create a Candor account and link your accounts through bank-grade sign-in.
2. Copy one setup message into Claude, ChatGPT, or your agent, and approve its access.
3. Ask where your money went last month; your agent answers from your records with the figures.
4. What you decide, such as a budget, a goal, or a charge you keep, is saved with its reason.

## Is Monarch Money worth it?

Yes, if you will use it. Monarch Core costs $99.99 a year or $14.99 a month, and it gives a household one place for budgets, cash flow, investments, and goals, with no ads. It suits people who like reviewing their money themselves and couples who want to do it together. It is harder to justify if you won't open it each week.

There is no free plan, so use the free week as a test. Link your accounts, sort a month of transactions, and set up a budget before you decide. Monarch's pricing page also offers 30% off the first year of annual Core with the code WELCOME, and that offer can end at any time.

Monarch plans and Candor, checked November 1, 2026. Prices change; check each vendor's page before buying.:

| | Price | Best if you want |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Monarch Core | $14.99/mo or $99.99/yr; first week free | A shared household budget, net worth, investments, and goals in one app |
| Monarch Plus | $199/yr | Forecasting, deeper investment tracking, multiple income sources, and higher MCP limits |
| Candor | $14.99/mo or $99/yr; 7-day free trial | The AI agent you already use to set up and keep your goals and budget, with a weekly review of your finances |

## Is Monarch Money safe?

Yes. Monarch has read-only access to your accounts, can't move money, and says it never sees or stores your bank login. It connects banks through Plaid, Finicity, and MX. It has a SOC 2 Type 2 report from independent auditors and encrypts your data in transit and at rest. Monarch says it does not sell your financial data.

Turn on multi-factor authentication for your Monarch login, since that sign-in protects a view of all your accounts. Monarch's AI features send the data each task needs to models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and others. Monarch says those providers can't train on your conversations. It also says a conversation you rate with a thumbs down may be saved and reviewed.

Each connection partner has its own privacy policy, and Monarch says its agreements let some of them use de-identified data to improve their services.

## What does Monarch do well?

Monarch handles household money well. One subscription covers the household, each member gets their own login at no extra cost, and Shared Views mark accounts and transactions as yours, mine, or ours. It runs on the web, iPhone, iPad, and Android, and it holds 4.9 out of 5 from 116K App Store ratings.

It also covers more than budgets. Monarch tracks investments and net worth, shows a credit score, and has an AI Assistant that answers questions about your spending. Its official MCP connector lets Claude, ChatGPT, and some other AI tools read your Monarch data.

## Where does Monarch fall short?

Monarch sorts your transactions and sends a weekly recap, and the budget stays yours to keep up. You check what it sorted, adjust the budget, and decide what to do about what changed. Its AI Assistant answers when you ask and can't act outside Monarch. There is no free plan, and Core gets fewer MCP requests each week than Plus.

The MCP connector has limits of its own. Accounts Monarch connects through Finicity, which can include Fidelity brokerage accounts, are not available through it yet, and Monarch can't undo changes your AI makes with write access.

Like any app built on bank connections, Monarch depends on those links staying up. When a connection breaks, you have to fix it before the numbers are current again.

## What should you use instead of Monarch?

If you already use Claude, ChatGPT, or another AI agent, choose Candor. With Candor, your agent sorts your spending and keeps your goals and budget for you. Every week Candor reviews your finances and tells your agent what's worth talking through and why, so it brings up a goal slipping or a bill that went up while there is still time to act on it.

Tell your agent what you want, like paying off the cards or working four days a week, even if you haven't worked it out yet. It sets up goals measured from your real accounts and a budget that pays for them, and it tells you straight what works, what doesn't yet, and what would have to change. Your figures come from your records, and your decisions stay saved with their reasons, in whichever agent you use.

Candor has no phone app of its own and does not include a credit score. You use it through your agent and a web dashboard. It never moves money, and it does not import your Monarch history; it links your accounts itself.

## Who should choose Monarch?

Choose Monarch if your household wants a budgeting app to check together, or if you want to see everything in one app and enjoy keeping it current. It is a good fit for people who don't want an AI agent involved in their money.

## How was this review researched?
